Week 1 Materials

Day 1

  1. New groups
  2. Notetaking and summaries setup
  3. Design challenge: Spaghetti tower. Construct a tower as tall as possible using spaghetti and marshmallows. First do some experiments with shapes and configurations, then build a tower as tall as possible within 25 minutes.

Day 2

  1. Plan and start building a spaghetti bridge

Your group will be building two bridges made from spaghetti and glue. The idea is to build bridges which can hold as much weight as possible.

The bridges shall be free-standing and must span a gap between two tables. One bridge will span a 22 cm gap. We will do this bridge first. The second bridge must span an 80 cm gap. This will be your second bridge.

You must incorporate a place for a "loading platform" consisting of a J-bolt secured to a piece of plywood (1.2 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm). All loads will be suspended from this J-bolt, and there must be a clear space directly below it to allow loads to be attached.

The maximum weight of the bridges must not exceed 0.75 kilograms.

Day 3

  1. Spaghetti bridge construction

Day 4

Health Day

Day 5

  1. Junk science assignment (Mark will be at the 11th Grade retreat)
