Week 9 Materials

Day 1

  1. New groups, set up week 9 notes
  2. Writing the final report on the Rube Goldberg:

Your report should include the following elements:

  1. Identify clearly what the final task was
  2. List clearly all the energy transitions that took place
  3. Identify which of the simple machines were used
  4. Calculate for at least one of the elements how much energy was put INTO the piece and how much energy came OUT of the piece.
  5. Debrief: What worked? What didn't? What would you do differently?
  1. Due tomorrow in class.

Day 2

  1. Unit conversion and energy resources.
  2. Energy resources. What are the major sources of energy used in the "real world" today?
  3. We're going to do a research project -- investigating the issues around a particular energy resource, and presenting the results and issues to the rest of the class. Your work should take the form of a debate -- which ennergy source is "best"? Why? What are the benefits and drawbacks of your resource?
  4. Research time.

Day 3

  1. More unit conversion and energy resources
  2. Research time

Day 4

  1. Quiz on simple machines, energy, and unit conversion
  2. Research time
